What is Glamping?

Traditional camping involves setting off into the great outdoors with your own tent, pitching up and providing your own shelter either in a designated campsite or if wild camping, in an area of your own choosing. Glamping is for those who like a few more home comforts. Glamping is an amalgamation of the words glamorous and camping. Glamping is becoming an increasingly popular way of experiencing the outdoors in a bit more style.

Styles of Glamping

Glamping is available across the whole of the UK and the rest of the world and can take many forms. Examples include pods, yurts and cabins, with more unique and interesting accommodation becoming available all the time. A quick internet search suggests tree houses, gypsy caravans, wigwams and even revamped buses and aeroplanes. Once you have decided on your location and type of accommodation there are even more decisions to be made. If you decide to stay in a tree house you must then decide which type of tree house. What would be your preference, a traditional tree house built on to the trunk of a tree, one on stilts or one that is suspended from the branches of the tree? It seems the “sky’s the limit,” as somebody famously said. Some of the accommodation is complete luxury, the only resemblance to camping being the location and appreciation of your natural surroundings.

An online article by Country Living from 5th April 2019, explores their eleven best glamping sites available to us here in the UK. I will attach a link to this later, should you wish to see what’s available.

To Glamp or Camp?

As with everything the cost of glamping will vary wildly depending on what you are looking for. If money is not a problem, you really can have that glamping holiday you dream of.

There are options for everyone though and plenty of sites and experiences to chose from whatever your budget. Of course, another option would be to make your camping trip that little bit more luxurious yourself. If you are a seasoned camper, have you considered investing in a new tent? Perhaps consider a slightly bigger tent than you think you will need, which in itself will allow for more comfort. A tent big enough to stand up in is another good option. How about taking an airbed to sleep on? It’s so much more comfortable than sleeping directly on the ground. It may be a pain to inflate but it really could make all the difference to your experience. Camp beds are another excellent option, there’s nothing worse than a bad back especially when you are on holiday!

Take a good cool box with you so that any fresh supplies you buy on will keep fresh for longer and don’t forget some camping chairs which will also make that camping experience a bit more luxurious and enjoyable.
